Webgen.

Webgen is a ruby tool for building static web sites. I tried it out this morning, and was pretty impressed with its simplicity.

Images in the Database.

You shouldn't store images in a database, goes the common wisdom. The details for what doing so involves at a performance level is listed here.

That having been said, most of the sites I work with are low traffic, and the easier setup and synchronization of keeping images in the database outweighs the performance disadvantages. Use what works for you.

Bugs Bunny Basebal.

A deep and through analysis of a Bugs Bunny baseball game. Funny.

It is a rare application of mental acuity and misdirection in debate that persuaded the umpire to change the call – against the interests of his own team – and allow Bunny to score again. For those that say that arguing with umpires is guaranteed not to help and is frequently harmful, this will stand as a powerful counter-example. If a player impersonating an ump can be turned to reverse a call in those circumstances, what chance does a neutral arbitrator have against a similarly golden-tongued player? We can only hope that a real umpire, faced with the same kind of oratory jujitsu, would have the presence of mind to focus on the events and continue to make the right call.

McCarthys and the O'Connors.

Rows are not just confined to the traditional inter-family clashes though. A few months ago we had John Patrick O'Connor (almost every man of them is named after a saint or a pope) up for affray after a bit of a do at a local club that included bar stools being hurled about the room, and what must have been a gratifyingly large amount of broken glass. Police had been summoned but the first two officers on scene, aware of whom they were up against, prudently sat round the corner in their car until two or three vanloads of reinforcements had arrived.

In court John Patrick was heard to say "Sure it was nothing, ,it was just a traveller wedding, that's all" - presumably the punch-up is an old nuptial tradition in the family.

Part of yet another well written article on the Magistrate's Blog.
